So many people pay a monthly fee to rent a storage unit, and then they just let things sit there, month after month. If paying just for a space to store these things is worth it to you, then there is nothing wrong with this. But many people feel like they could be getting more out of their self-storage units. If you're wondering how to maximize the way you use the storage space you pay for, here are some suggestions.

Rotate out your seasonal items.

If you are not already using your storage unit as a space to store things that you only use seasonally, then it's time to start doing so. During the summer, you can store your snow blower, snow shovels, rock salt, and other winter items. During the winter, you can store your bikes, your lawn mower, your weed whacker, and any other summer items. This should free up some more space in your garage, shed, or wherever you're currently keeping your off-season items. It will also be a good way to mark the changing of the seasons. The day you move the winter things into storage and the summer things out will be a nice first day of spring celebration.

Clear more clutter.

When you look around your house, do you feel like certain rooms are cluttered? Are there decorations that take up space but don't really add anything to the room? Maybe you have more sets of dishes than you need. Throwing away or donating these things can be really hard, but putting them in your storage unit is pretty easy.

If you do ultimately want to get rid of these non-essential clutter items, here's a way to do it with the help of your storage unit. Pack the things up into boxes. Put a date on the boxes. Once a box sits in storage for a year without you needing the items inside, donate or throw away that box. Knowing you have not needed something for a whole year helps reassure you that you really don't need it after all.

Stash your occasionally used hobby equipment.

If you are someone who has several hobbies that involve a lot of equipment, try using your self-storage unit to store that equipment. This way, you won't have to trip over a bike, some skis, or bags of hiking gear every day when you only use this hobby gear a few times a year. It's easy enough to keep these things in your storage unit and then swing by the unit to pick them up on the odd that occasion you do want to use these things.

You can definitely use one self-storage unit to satisfy more than one goal. If you begin using your unit in one or more of the ways recommended above, then you'll feel like you're getting more out of it.
